Platalea leucorodia in protected areas of Hormozgan province
Hormozgan province with the area of 71193/472 km2,and costal line with 1500 km length is located in the northern shores of Persian Gulf and Oman sea . The common Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) is a wader bird of the ibis and spoonbill family Threskiornithidae.The Body length is about 80-90 cm, wing-span 115-130 cm.the breeding bird is all white except for its dark legs,black bill with a yellow tip. This species is widespread across southern Eurasia from Spain to Japan ,and north Africa.This species has found az wintering migratory type in the north and az breeding migratory in the south of Iran.
It accurs in marsh lands with some open shallow water , nesting in colonies in trees or reedbeds. Nest length is 37.74 cm and nest width is 28.5 cm also the nest depth is 2.1 cm and weight of chick in first time of breeding is 47 gr .Usually four eggs are laid. size of eggs are usually 46×67 mm , weight of eggs are about 76 gr and laid between 2-3 days.This spoonbill feeds on various fishes, forgs and other water creatures .

The common spoonbill in one of the species to which the agreement on the conservation of African – Eurasian Migratory water birds (AEWA) applies. Accoarding to the Last Bird counting in Hormozgan coast lines (January 2008) about 206 pice of Spoonbill have seen in the creeks as shown in following Table. so this indicates that the Hormozgan coasts are one the best Habitat for wintering of this species.
Water pollution of the shallow bays with reed-beds and downstream riverrine areas ,decrease in the food resources,direct human disturbance.
